You shall have no other Elohim BEFORE ME
Ex. 20:3, "You shall have no other Elohim BEFORE ME."
ELOHIM NOT GOD
There is no single Hebrew Word that is the equivalent of the English term "god" or embraces the scope of meanings associated with it. Therefore people, with Christian backgrounds, try to stretch this first commandment to cover improper thoughts, feelings, or virtually any thing that smacks of a breach of faith. Well if that Christian position is true, then no wonder they feel hopeless in keeping the commandments, since every one has improper thoughts and.feelings at some time in their lives.
Elohim is the Hebrew for a powerful "One" usually bound by an oath or worshipped. Examples are idols or appointed heads such as "Moses" and the Judges of Israel
The key here are the words "before me". The thrust of this command is not, "You shall have no other Elohim", but no other Elohim >>>BEFORE<<< me. You can have other Elohim as long as they are Yahuah's servants.
"Before me" is from the two Hebrew words al <Strong's 5921> & Paniym <Strong's 6440> .
When these two are used together "Al Paniym" [Before me], They carry the thrust of "in my face", "more important than me" or "of more authority than me" [contrary to me]. He doesn't want you to put other Elohim's as of more authority in your life than him. We know that he has appointed Elohim's [behind or under him] are to be obeyed! Examples are as follows:
An Elohim is a power or authority usually under oath or bound by a covenant, or "One" who is worshiped.
Exodus 4:16 And he shall be thy spokesman unto the people: and he shall be, even he shall be to thee instead of a mouth, and thou shalt be to him instead of Elohim. (KJV)
The Hebrew does not contain the words "instead of" it reads -
Exodus 4:16 And he shall be thy spokesman unto the people: and he shall be, even he shall be to thee, a mouth, and thou shalt be to him, Elohim. (KJV)
Also in old times THE JUDGES of Israel were MANY TIMES CALLED Elohim. But they weren't Elohim contrary, before or over YHVH, but they were seated by his authority so were behind or under him.
Exodus 22:9 For all manner of trespass, whether it be for ox, for ass, for sheep, for raiment, or for any manner of lost thing, which another challengeth to be his, the cause of both parties shall come before the judges <Elohim 0430>; and whom the judges
Ways of breaking it are:
Bowing in worship to idols.
Following a order from a worldly authority that is against one of Yahuah's commandments.
Following a Pastor into pagan worship. Etc. etc.
You are not to put a mighty one in front of or in place of Yahuah as your authority.
