HOW TO CELEBRATE

Traditionally, the husband and wife lead their family in celebration of the Sabbath, however anyone can perform the service. If only one person is doing the service that person does all the prayers. If two or more people are joined together then one is picked as Leader and one is picked to do the wife's part, can be either male or female.

Below the steps are outlined in the order that they should be performed.

The Weekly Sabbath Candle Blessing.

Sabbath candles may be lit, at the earliest 1 1/4 hours before sunset, but the usual time is up to 18 minutes before sunset.

Move your hands around the flames several times and bring them towards your face. This gesture symbolically welcomes the Sabbath into your home.

Place your hands over your eyes , so that you do not see the Sabbath lights until you have recited the blessing.

Husband, or leader:

Blessed are You, Yahuah, Creator of the Universe, Who has made us holy by giving us your Commandments, and have commanded us to kindle the Sabbath lights.

(If there is no husband and wife at the table then this is omitted)

Blessing Your Wife

Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.
The heart of her husband does safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.
She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.
She seeks wool, and flax, and works willingly with her hands.
She is like the merchants' ships; she brings her food from afar.
She rises also while it is yet night, and gives meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens.
She considers a field, and buys it: with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard.
She girds her loins with strength, and strengthens her arms.
She perceives that her merchandise is good: her candle goes not out by night.
She lays her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.
She stretches out her hand to the poor; yea, she reaches forth her hands to the needy.
She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet.
She makes herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.
Her husband is known in the gates, when he sits among the elders of the land.
She makes fine linen, and sells it; and delivers girdles unto the merchant.
Strength and honor are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.
She opens her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.
She looks well to the ways of her household, and eats not the bread of idleness.
Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.
Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excels them all.
Favor is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that fears the Yahuah, she shall be praised.
Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

Blessing Your Children

For a son:

May Yahuah, make you like Ephraim and Menasheh.

For a Daughter:

May Yahuah, make you like Sarah, and Ruth.

May Yahuah bless you and keep you. May Yahuah make his face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. May Yahuah lift up His face towards you and give you peace.

Blessed are You, Yahuah, Creator of the Universe, Who gives food and drink to the entire world with His goodness, His favor, His kindness, and with His great mercy. For He is Almighty Who feeds and maintains all, Who does good to all of His creatures which He created. Blessed are You, Yahuah, Who gives food and drink to all.

We give thanks to You, Yahuah, our God, for Your parceling out as a heritage to our fathers, a land which is desirable, good, spacious, and free to worship You and to follow Your ways. You have brought us out of the land of Egypt, and You have redeemed us from the house of bondage. Your only covenant which You sealed in our hearts and minds. Your Torah and teachings which You have taught us. For Your statutes which You have made known to us for life, favor, and kindness which You granted us. For the food which You nourish and maintain us constantly, every day, in every hour.

For everything Yahuah, our God, we thank You and bless You. Blessed be Your Name through the mouth of all the living, constantly and forever. As it is written, "When you have received good things, you will bless Yahuah, your God, for the good land which He has given you." Blessed are You, Yahuah, for the land and for the food and drink.

Have compassion, Yahuah, our God, on all of Yehisrael, Your people; On Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), Your Holy City, the Dwelling place of Your glory; On the kinship of the House of David and the House of Avraham, Your anointed, and upon the great and Holy House upon which Your Name is called.

Yahuah, our Father tend us, nourish us, maintain us, sustain us, relieve us and grant us relief, Yahuah, speedily from all of our troubles. Yahuah, our God, may we never be in need of the gifts of men nor loans from them, but only of your hands which is always full, open, Holy, and generous, so we may not be obligated to them and we may be free to follow Your teachings.

Rebuild Yerushalayim (Jerusalem), city of the Holy Sanctuary, speedily, in our days. Blessed are You, Yahuah, Builder of Yerushalayim (Jerusalem) in His great Mercy. Amein.

Blessed are You, Yahuah, Creator of the Universe, the Almighty, our Father, our King, our Mighty One, our Creator, our Redeemer, our Maker, our Holy One, Holy One of Ya'acov ( Jacob ) , our Shepherd, Shepherd of Yehisrael, the King, Who is good and gives beneficent to all. Every single day He has done good, does good, and will do good to us all, and even more so to those who freely does His will. He has rewarded us, he rewards us, He will reward us forever with love, favor, kindness, compassion, relief, rescue, success, blessing, deliverance, consolation, maintenance, sustenance, life, peace, drink, and everything good. Of all good things may He never deprive us.

Yahuah will reign over us forever and ever. Yahuah will be blessed in heaven and on earth. Yahuah will be praised for all generations. Yahuah will be glorified through us forever and for all eternity. He will be honored through us for eternity. May Yahuah maintain us with honor. Yahuah will remove the yoke of the oppressor from our necks and He will lead us upright in the land He has given to us. May Yahuah send abundant blessing to this house, and upon this table at which we have eaten. The Yahuah will send unto us Elijah the prophet, who will announce to us good tidings, deliverance, consolation, and the return of the Messiah.

May Yahuah let us inherit the day which will be completely Sabbath, rest, and praise of the Most High for life everlasting.

Grace after the meal. (Week days and Sabbath)

on week days Psalm 23 is read and on Sabbath and on High Sabbaths Psalm 126 is read at the beginning.

when there are two are more people eating together, ages 13 for a boy and 12 for a girl, one of them leads the group in reading or reciting the grace after the meal.

Psalm 23:

Yahuah is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures: he leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul: he leads me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Yahuah prepares a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Yahuah anoints my head with oil; my cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Yahuah for ever.

Psalm 126:

When the Yahuah turned again the captivity of Zion, we were like them that dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing: then said they among the heathen, Yahuah has done great things for them. The Yahuah has done great things for us; whereof we are glad. Turn again our captivity, Yahuah, as the streams in the south. They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. He that goes forth and weeps, ( Yehoshua ) bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.

The leader says:

Children of Yahuah, let us give thanks for what we have received.

the leader says:

The Name of Yahuah will be blessed forever and ever.

the other(s) respond with:

The Name of Yahuah will be blessed forever and ever.

the leader says:

With your permission our masters, teachers, students, let us bless Yahuah for we have eaten of His bounty.

Blessed are You Yahuah, Creator of the Universe, for we have eaten of Your bounty and through Your goodness we live.

the other(s) respond with:

Blessed are You, Yahuah, Creator of the Universe, for we have eaten of Your bounty and through Your goodness we live.

the leader says:

Blessed is Yahuah our God and Blessed is Yahuah Great Name.

on regular week days pass over this paragraph and continue with "Rebuild Yerushalayim (Jerusalem)" however on Sabbath add:

May it please You, to strengthen us Yahuah, through Your commandments, and through Your commandment of the seventh day, This Holy Sabbath. For this day is Holy before You. May we refrain from work on it and rest on it with love for You, as ordained by Your will. a guest in the house who has eaten at this table will say.

CHALLAH

5 Pounds Flour
2 ounces fresh yeast and
1 package dry yeast
2 cups warm water
1 1/2 sticks margarine
2 1/3 cups boiling water
2 tbsps. salt
1 1/2 cups sugar
5 eggs

GLAZE

1 egg, beaten
Poppy seeds

Dissolve yeast in 2 cups warm water until it bubbles in a small bowl. In a large bowl, place margarine and pour boiling water over it and stir until margarine is melted. Add salt and sugar. Let cool for a few minutes and beat in eggs. Add the bubbling yeast. Gradually add flour. Knead in for 10 minutes. If dough is too moist add a little more flour.

When ready to rise, smear top of dough with oil, cover and let rise for 1 hour. Separate a small portion, about the size of your fist, ( say blessing) of dough known as "Challis" from the whole dough. Shape and let rise another hour. Brush with beaten egg to glaze. Sprinkle with poppy seeds.

Bake at 350 degrees 1 hour for large Challis, 1/2 hour for smaller Challis and rolls.

Blessing

Blessed are you Yahuah, Creator of the Universe, Who sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to separate the Challis from the dough.

When you prepare a batch of dough that is at least 3 pounds 10.7 ounces, you must remove a *kazayis piece of dough and recite the above blessing. This piece is then burned. If the dough weights less than 3 pounds 10.7 ounces the Kazayis is removed but the blessing is not recited.

* kazayis is a piece of dough about the size of your fist.

What you need for a Havdalah

1. A wine cup
2. A tray to hold the wine cup ( a saucier or small plate will do.)
3. A Havdalah Candle
4. A spice Box

The Meaning of Havdalah

The Hebrew word Havdalah means separation or distinction. By performing the Havdalah ceremony, we formally mark the end of Shabbat, affirming the distinction between the Sabbath and the other days of the week, between the sacred and the secular.

In a short but pleasurable ceremony with the family members close at hand we say our good byes to the Sabbath and begin our wait for the next Sabbath.

Traditionally, the Havdalah ceremony takes place when three stars can be observed in the sky, indicating that evening has arrived (admittedly, this can be a challenge for those living the city or on cloudy evenings). One fun way of inaugurating Havdalah is to go outside and have children watch for and count out the three stars.

There are four ritual items necessary for performing the traditional ceremony. These are a cup of wine, a tray for the wine cup (it will hold a small portion of wine which is spilled during the ceremony), a braided candle, and a box for spices. Special spice boxes and the traditional braided Havdalah candle, wine cups and trays can be purchased at most synagogues or Judaica shops. We plan to have an on-line store soon where you can buy these and other items from the Messianic Hebrews. The candles and spice boxes can also be made by hand as easy and inexpensive crafts projects for the family. The wine cup and tray can be a special cup or glass and saucer set aside for this purpose only.

Introduction to the Ceremony

The experience of Havdalah is at its best when participants stand close together in a circle. It is also pleasant to turn down the lights if the ritual is being conducted indoors, allowing participants to experience the darkness which brings an end to Shabbat, and the lovely light emanating from the Havdalah candle.

After pouring a cup of wine to overflowing, we kindle the braided candle, unlike the lighting of candles for Shabbat, we do not accompany the kindling of the Havdalah candle with a blessing. This bring us to another reason to make sure the Evening has came and Shabbat has ended, we are not permitted to kindle a fire on Sabbath. It is common to have a child hold the Havdalah candle, use foil at its base to insure that the candle does not drip hot wax on its holder. Special Havdalah Candle holders are avilable also.

The introductory verses of the ceremony, taken from the books of Isaiah, Psalms, and Esther, are usually read or chanted by a single participant. The combined verses express our hope for redemption in the days to come. It is a frequent practice for the entire group to join in the recitation of the verse Esther 8:16 "The Hebrew had light and gladness, and joy and honor."

So may we be blessed . . .. Behold, Yahuah is my deliverance; I am confident and unafraid; Yahuah is my strength, my song, and my deliverance. With joy shall you draw water out of the wells of salvation. Yours alone, Yahuah, is salvation; may Your blessings be on Your people. Yahuah is with us; the God of Jacob is our protection. Yahuah, happy is the one who trusts in You. Help us, Yahuah. Answer us, Sovereign, on the day when we call. The Hebrew had light and gladness, and joy and honor. So may we be blessed. I lift the cup of salvation and call upon the name of Yahuah.

The Blessing over Wine

Just as we welcome Shabbat on Friday evening, we usher in the new week by saying a blessing over a full cup of wine. The wine represents joy, and the full cup marks our appreciation of the bounty we enjoy. The blessing over wine in the Havdalah ceremony is identical to the first blessing of the Shabbat Kiddush, but we wait until the Havdalah ceremony is completed before drinking the wine.

Praised are you, Yahuah, Sovereign of the universe, who has created the fruit of the vine.

The Blessing over Spices

The blessing over spices is unique to Havdalah. Rabbinic legend tells us that with the peace of Shabbat, every Hebrew receives an additional soul (neshama yeteira). When this extra soul departs at the end of Shabbat, the remaining soul experiences a sort of depression. Enjoying the scent of the spices at Havdalah is an attempt to cheer up this soul as it prepares for the coming week of labor.

Praised are you, Yahuah, Sovereign of the universe, who has created different spices.

The spices are shaken and passed around for all to enjoy their fragrance.

The Blessing over Lights

Havdalah includes a special blessing over light. One of the many interpretations of this act speaks of our capacity to kindle fire for both positive and destructive aims. At Havdalah, we hope that our actions in the coming week will have a positive impact upon the world around us.

Because the blessing refers to Yahuah as creator of the lights of fire, our rabbins teach that the Havdalah candle should have at least three wicks. Many people find added meaning in the braids of the candle, understanding them to represent the interweaving and interdependence of the family, the Hebrew people, and humanity and Yahuah, Yehoshua and Yeh the Holy Spirit others yet see it as the interweaving of Yahuah, Yehoshua, and The Hebrews.

We say the blessing over light, extending our hands towards the candle with our palms facing us, turning our hands so as to observing the reflection of the light in our fingernails. Hebrew tradition discourages reciting a blessing over something that we do not use. We therefore use the light of the candle in deriving pleasure from the play of light and shadow upon our hands.

Praised are you, Yahuah, Sovereign of the universe, who has created the lights of fire.

The Havdalah Blessing

We now recite a blessing affirming distinctions in all parts of our lives. At the end of this blessing, we drink from the cup of wine.

Praised are You, Yahuah, Sovereign of the Universe, who distinguishes between sacred and secular, light and darkness, Yehisrael and other peoples, the seventh day and the six days of labor. Praised are you, Yahuah, who distinguishes between sacred and secular.

Pass the wine around for everyone to sip. As the following passage is said, extinguish the candle in the remaining wine in the tray which the cup was on when the wine cup was over filled and spilled into the tray.

May the Yahuah who separates the sacred and profane forgive our sins and make us as secure and as numerous as grains of sand and the stars at night.
